Musical education as a duty, networking as the top priority

The German Orchestra Conference 2006 in Bochum

Category: Essay
Das Orchester 09/2006, Page 10
In May 2006 the German Orchestra Conference took place in Bochum, for the first time staging round-table discussions with audience participation: its topics were "Networked, Connected – and Secure?", dealing with the question of whether and how local integration can help to ensure an orchestra’s viability; "The Orchestra as a Brand", discussing the need for integral marketing concepts and the still common scepticism that cultural marketing may result in the dumbing down of artistic standards; and "Education, Music Transmission and Audience Development": after hesitant beginnings, participants stated, there is now a fresh wind blowing, with music education becoming a key responsibility in many ensembles. Finally, the "Hermann-Voss-Cultural Award" was presented to the conductor Prof. Gerd Albrecht for his long-standing commitment to music education.
