Intonation in the lower register has always been tricky for bassoon players. Over a number of years the author has been occupied with the development of a new bass joint, the process of which is described in the article. A wider dynamic register and greater chromatic variation was realised through changes to relative tone-hole diameter, tested by physical resonance measurements.
