For decades European classical music has met with great interest in China. The country's rapid economic development is now allowing greater numbers of Chinese students than ever before to take up courses at German music academies. While technically often proficient, students appreciate the better equipment of German schools and the opportunity to acquire a deeper understanding of European musical traditions. Yet unlike earlier generations, many of today's students intend to return to China, as job prospects for highly qualified musicians are promising. For this reason, vice-chancellors are planning a joint academy in China, allowing students local access to musical training "made in Germany".
