The article summarises the results of a research project at the University of Freiburg, which analysed the proportions of female students and graduates at German music academies and their employment within the 131 publicly subsidised orchestras. It found that while the share of female students has been continuously high (around 47 % to 51 %) since 1988, women are still clearly underrepresented (with about 27 %) within the orchestras. At the same time, this share has grown from 12 % over the past 15 years, the result of a growing number of women which are increasingly successful in castings for new positions. The long-term trend shows that women are clearly catching up. Even so, instrument groups remain strongly gendered, showing only little variation over time and the same also applies to payment.
