Blankenburg, Elke Mascha

Female conductors yesterday and today

The neglected part in the music business

Category: Essay
Das Orchester 05/2005, Page 15
Female conductors are still the exception. Blankenburg argues that women are typically regarded as a kind of marvel if they make it to the conductor's desk, reaffirming their outsider status and the prejudice that conducting is not really a suitable profession for a woman. Yet she shows that women have been conductors since the 17th century. Quoting contemporary woman conductors she illustrates how important and encouraging their example can be for younger female professionals still in the early stages of their career. In fact, female socialisation can even be useful as it inculcates valuable skills such as teamwork, patience, receptivity. It is time, she states, to overcome the "myth of the maestro as hero" and judge conductors on the basis of artistic merit, not gender.
