After an international career as a conductor and musical director, Australian Simone Young will be taking up the twin posts of intendant and musical director at the Hamburg State Opera in September 2005. After the stormy exit of her predecessor, Young expects a better cooperation with Hamburg’s senator for culture. While budget restraints clearly continue, some concessions have been achieved. An important focus of activity will be youth work, especially the "Opera piccola" in which professionals and school children are working together. Young is also considering a workshop programme, although this would require external funding. Asked about the conflict potential of more directorial productions, Young argues for a balance between controversial and less demanding works.
