Marin Alsop studied at Yale and the Juilliard School. She had her European debut in 1993 and is currently the chief conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Contemporary music is a focus of her interests, even though, in her experience, its promotion is frequently more complex. Especially older audiences often have difficulties finding access, while younger audiences are more familiar with the current stylistic influences, which in the USA, she says, are often inspired by rock 'n' roll and modern city life, close to dance music. Even orchestras may not always be eager to study contemporary pieces. National differences between ensembles – regarding sound, but also working conditions – can be considerable, Alsop states.
