The orchestra scene in the Czech Republic and Slowakia

Category: Essay
Das Orchester 05/2005, Page 27
Schindler's article gives a broad overview of the orchestras in the two countries. With 32 orchestras the Czech Republic enjoys a high density of ensembles, of which the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra is the most prestigious. Their financial structure, concert season as well as music education are generally comparable to Germany. While salaries are low, commitment tends to be high, with few musicians seeking employment beyond the borders. Slowakia's orchestra scene is considerably smaller and budget problems are even more acute than for many Czech ensembles. Programming tends towards mainstream classics and a strong accent on national composers as Slowakian ensembles are under intense pressure to maintain audience figures.
