In Germany, even experts tend to know little about George Enescu apart from his two rhapsodies, yet in Rumania he is regarded as a national hero, a composer who put Rumania on the map of the international music scene, being and sounding both, "national" and "universal". Influenced by Brahms, Wagner and the French tradition he also incorporated Rumanian folk music as a characteristic feature of his work, creating his own distinct modernist style. Killyen lists and evaluates a number of Enescu's compositions, which still await rediscovery by German concert programmers.
