musician's medicine today

Claudia Spahn’s introduction looks at the issues that musicians’ medicine currently addresses and will need to address in the future. She applauds the now widespread integration of medical aspects into music academies’ curricula, but points out that changes in musicians’ everyday practice occur only gradually. As surveys show a significant prevalence of occupational illnesses, there is still need for action. Spahn then highlights in particular psychological factors that can impact on musicians’ well-being: communication (or the lack thereof) within an ensemble and stage fright. Both, she argues, receive too little attention during musicians’ training and much more could be done to handle these factors in a more positive way.  >>
