German Orchestra Union
(Deutsche Orchestervereinigung e.V.)

Every professional group that wishes to remain competitive in today’s pluralistic society must be well-organised and well-represented. This requires competence and experience, as well as the ability and determination to succeed. In view of a wide variety of interests and complex social developments, this is particularly true for culture and the arts.
For this reason, musicians united in 1952 to form the German Orchestra Union (DOV). Almost all the members of the German orchestras and radio choirs are represented by the Union; since 1990 (the year of German reunification), this representation has extended to the whole of Germany. This is a unique expression of great solidarity and fellowship.
The commitment of the members to their honorary duties for the DOV has always been outstanding. All elected delegates and members of the collective bargaining committees and boards are without exception active musicians who carry out honorary duties for the benefit of their profession. The guidelines of the DOV’s union policy determine the delegates who are elected by the orchestra and radio choir members, and who come together every three years to attend a delegates’ conference where, for example, the executive committee and auditors are elected.
The DOV has its headquarters in Berlin. The director of the Union is Gerald Mertens, a lawyer.
