A health analysis of orchestra musicians

Few professions experience such tensions as orchestra musicians, and work-specific physiological and psychological ailments are widespread. Despite this fact, there are hardly any detailed health analyses that identify adverse as well beneficial factors shaping working conditions. This study conducted by the University of Leipzig aims to redress this situation. Some selected results: while the great majority of musicians valued the diversity of their work and the appreciation of their audiences, many also mentioned noise, crammed space and little scope of individual action as negative factors. Especially less high-profile ensembles and those that had recently been merged also complained about job insecurity and a lack of internal communication.
