Vongries, CarolineWhy can’t we Europeans fly?Venezuela’s "orchestra miracle" and some questions from overseas regarding the self-image of our Kulturnationcategory: Essay published in: das Orchester 02/2005, Page 8 |
Vongries gives an in-depth insight into the development of the Venezuelan orchestra movement, initiated by José Antonio Abreu thirty years ago with a small, yet rapidly growing group of unemployed musicians. While the nationwide network of music schools and orchestras that has sprung up since produces world-class musicians, often at a still very young age, Vongries emphasises the enormous social and cultural significance of this movement. Training is given in an atmosphere of greatest enthusiasm, discipline, openness and support as classical music is seen as way to change the life of the individual as well as society at large, often against very dire conditions. It is this point which makes Venezuela a model for orchestral work in Germany too, showing a way to make classical music not only artistically, but also socially relevant and thus securing its future.
