What’s in it for aspiring orchestra musicians?

There is a large and growing number of music competitions. Yet opinions whether they have much practical value for orchestra musicians are divided. In his introduction, Marco Frei presents some of the pros and cons – with the cons possibly prevailing. Competition winners, it seems, are suspect within structures that rely on teamwork. And yet, competitions still have value, finds Marthe Lisson, though what counts is not so much winning, but participating. The competitive environment, the extended period of preparation allow to learn more about one’s own artistic approach, rehearsal practice and stress management.
