When the Schott music publishing house announced the publication of the first Edition Schott editions in 1913, the publisher, privy councillor Ludwig Strecker, wanted to create a folk library of music: reliable editions of major original works and arrangements of well-known tunes in separate editions at a low price. His idea was a success. Edition Schott editions have been sold in millions of copies throughout the world.
The idea of Ludwig Strecker has been continued until today: with new editions and additions to the repertoire. In the 1980s, for example, the programme was expanded by adding jazz standards. At present, it also includes arrangements of well-known salon-music tunes for instruments previously not represented in the series, such as viola, saxophone, or horn.
With a comprehensive programme and a new modern design, the Edition Schott series prepares for its centenary in 2013 and will provide musicians with low-priced editions for music lessons, concerts and private music-making even in its second century of existence.
