Description
There has never been a violin concerto like this before: over a 30 minute span, Jörg Widmann has the soloist perform his emotionally taxing part almost without a break. At the beginning and at the end of the work, the violin plays alone, whereas in the middle section it is accompanied by carefully darkened orchestral colours. In contrast to his previous concert pieces, Widmann does not explore the extremes of the solo concerto but takes the form as an opportunity to explore extreme nuances of sound and tempo.
