Guus Ponsioen’s musical Das Geheimnis des schwarzen Giftes is about the revolutionary power of Gutenberg’s invention of printing at the time of the Peasants’ Wars: The farmer’s daughter Hanna hides the rebel Jon and in return asks him to teach her how to read and write – although girls are not allowed to read! Learning of the peasants’ revolts, she decides to shake up her village by means of secretly printed leaflets.
