for chamber orchestra (1988)
Instrumentation: chamber orchestra
Categories: Orchestra Night Music Stress Torpor Melancholy Fear
Description:
Trees play a central role in the life and work of Toru Takemitsu. The Japanese composer named his first daughter Maki ('pine tree') and wrote the famous piece 'Music for Trees' in 1961. A row of acacias lining the slope in front of his study inspired him in 1988 to write 'Tree Line'. Like the music of Debussy, this meditative music develops a shimmering atmosphere and suggestive graphic quality. Takemitsu's sounds evoke the picture of high trees with leafs rustling in the wind in our minds. No wonder that his sounds can conjure up images: The composer wrote scores for almost one hundred Japanese films.

CD: Oliver Knussen, Conductor - London Sinfonietta, Deutsche Grammophon DG 453 495-2
